Rum Village Fun Run

I had a great time Saturday morning as I participated in what is a long-running running tradition in South Bend, Indiana.

Rum Village is a densly wooded and hilly park on the South side of town. For over 20 years the park department of South Bend has sponsored winter fun runs on the circular drive that runs around the park. Larry Morningstar, a former high school track coach and teacher has been the driving force for the program all these years. Entry fee is $3. There are no shirts, but there are ribbons for nearly everyone and lots of fun for all.

The Fun Runs include a 2.5K and 5mi route. The 5 mile takes 6 loops of the circular drive through the park. You are on your honor to get the count right :-).

Saturday morning I arrived for my first Rum Village Fun Run in 16 years. It was as good as I remembered... A nice, neighborly gathering of an assortment of all running types - high school cross country team members, pre-teen kids, old slow geezers, and fit and trim 70-somethings. I ran into a running partner I hadn't seen in 16 years. It was a good time.

I wasn't really feeling like pushing it. It was about 32 degrees and the footing was slippery in spots. I made it through the 6 loops for the 5 mile OK though. I managed a strong finish and came in at 42:05. That's way off from what I did 16 years ago, but it is a Masters PR for me to improve upon.

If you happen to be in South Bend, IN on January 11, February 1, or February 22, head out to Rum Village for the 10 am Fun Run. A great time is guaranteed!
